Dect:

Dect stands for 'digital enhanced cordless telephone' and is a technology that originates from Europe before gaining world wide acceptance for interconnecting telephones and other cordless communication devices such as wireless headsets.

Dect phones are more commonly found in the home as well as the work place. With Dect technology constantly being improved you now get Dect phones that can offer CLI (call line identification), SMS (texting), downloading, voice prompted dialling, and large name & number directories.

Due to the ever increasing popularity of Dect technology and competition between manufacturers such as BT, Panasonic, Siemens, Doro, Dect products have become affordable for us all.

Key Benefits Of Dect:

- Dect Cordless Telephones offer superior speech quality compared to Analogue Cordless Phones.

- Dect Cordless Telephones have reception ranges of up to 300m. This can be further boosted to 600m with the use of a Dect repeater.

- Gap compliant Dect handsets can support additional handsets, even from other manufacturers.

- With Digital encryption Dect Telephones offer you increased security.

- Dect Telephones offer the user the facility to transfer calls between other Dect Handsets creating a digital cordless telephone system.

The Future Of Dect?

Where is DECT going from here ? The answer is certainly to larger markets, lower costs and new applications. As we've outlined above, whilst the domestic digital cordless phone market is maturing in Europe, it is only just beginning in other parts of the world.
Business PABX systems likewise will proliferate in the years ahead. The breakthrough of DECT into the wireless local loop market has now happened - the availability of indigenous DECT technology in countries like India and China, and the presence of local industry fora, will ensure that DECT is not seen simply as a Western solution being forced on developing countries.

The advent of the Internet / WWW is beginning to open the door to the vast potential DECT holds for data/multimedia applications, in both developed and developing economies.

As DECT becomes a true commodity technology, so in the future we may find cheap DECT modules incorporated in many of today's building control and security systems, providing intelligent systems that allow automatic control and alerting, augmenting and replacing today's customised telemetry and wired systems and proliferating into similar applications in the home, such as automatic security alerting in the event of unexpected entry, fire or flood, remote telephone control of appliances, return channels for interactive television, and many more.

Truly the future lies in one of the well known descriptions of DECT - "a versatile technology".

What Is Gap?

GAP - Generic Access Profile; this is a common interface for phones to talk to base stations. In theory, any GAP-compatible phone can be used with any other GAP phone. Some features such as shared phonebooks, Intercom, Call transfer and Caller ID may not work, however you will be able to make and receive calls with out a problem.

It is always wise to use the same manufacture when choosing a GAP phone to connect to your existing system but not necessary. Most DECT phones are GAP compatible but not all so when buying a DECT phone check the features for GAP Compatible.

Digiphone offers you the widest range of Dect phones from world leading manufacturers.

Skype:

Skype is a little piece of software that's quick and easy to get started with. Download, register, install, plug in your headset, speakers or USB phone and start calling anyone else on Skype free of charge anywhere else in the world.

The calls have excellent sound quality and are highly secure with end-to-end encryption. You don’t even need to configure your firewall or router or any other networking gear. It just…works.

Bridging The Gap:

It doesn’t just work on Windows either. Skype is also for Mac OS X, Linux and PDAs using Pocket PC, with a native look and feel for each platform. Talking, sending instant messages or even file transfers work between different platforms like a charm.

Digiphone stocks a wide variety of Skype phones.
